Chimbudevan is a director who will never make a normal movie with set formula that plagues Tamil movies and that's what makes his movies interesting. Although, I have found some flaw or the other in all his previous movies, I never had a dull moment watching them. I still stay on the channel for sometime if Arai En 305il Kadavul is played. Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum also brings in that novelty and sarcastical humor Chimbudevan is known for. And it has its own set of flaws like his other movies.
Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum is a time based three scenarios movie that elaborates on what happens if a person chooses to do the same work at three different times (within one minute apart). Chimbudevan has mentioned the German film, Run Lola Run as his inspiration (thanks to him for that), if you really want see the original of Run Lola Run, you should watch Kieslowski's Blind Chance.
Coming back to Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum, Naradar has a doubt when he meets Brahma on fate. He claims that the fate of a person should not change based on time. But Brahma thinks otherwise. They approach Shiva to clarify the doubt and Shiva randomly chooses a human from his database to explain how time plays a part in a man's life. Tamil (played by Arul Nithi) along with his friends Malar (Bindu Madhavi) and Ramanujam Isakki (Bugs aka Bagavathi) plan a plot to kidnap Tamil's lover Isabella (Ashrita Shetty) whose wedding is about to happen in a hour. The rest of the plot revolves around what happens if all the three start towards their destination at three different times. Each time, how they approach the issues they face makes the movie ludicrous and delightful.
To be fair to Chimbudevan, he has taken only the concept from Run Lola Run and has made an enjoyable plot with a brilliant screenplay. Even a slight slip up would have made the movie look stupid. The timing, the links and the environment are in sync. Oru Kaniyyum… has some brilliant performances from lead characters and the supporting ones. Even, one-scene characters impress you. Arul Nithi has been choosing roles that suit him and he portrays the character of Tamil in a perfect way. Bugs and Bindu Madhavi make the perfect foil and Bugs shines with his flawless timing. The supporting cast play the most important parts in the movie – Scissor Manohar, MS Bhaskar, Paandu, Crane Manohar, Ravi Raghavendara and Aadukalam Naren all bring down the house through their marvelous portrayals. And VS Ragavan is the perfect icing on the cake. Dialogues sprinkled with punchy oneliners will make you applaud. Sankaran Natrajan impresses in parts with his music while SR Kathir's cinematography is commendable.
Having said that, Oru Kanniyum .. has its problem with the character transpose in the lead protagonist. One man's fate can change in a minute, even the way he reacts to different situations might change but not the basic character. He can't become a so self-righteous in a moment. For instance, Tamil runs past the old lady twice but in the last sequence he helps her and there are many instances like this. This lack of consistency irks throughout the movie as he is the lead protagonist. In fact, Chimbudevan has shown the character consistency with respect to all his supporting characters. And the usual Chimbudevan's obsession with forced social messages in between scenes make you yawn.
If you weed of these negatives, Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum is an interesting watch. It doesn't make you restless and cringe on your seats. This is not a movie that will make you laugh instantly and forget next moment. This will make you savour the scenes later and will make you smile at odd times. In short, if you liked Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, you will like this too and it's a pity that people are shying away from movie halls due to idiotic reviews that has infested through social media and word of mouth.
A 3/5 for Oru Kanniyum Moondru Kalvanigalum and it definitely deserves a watch.
